Located on the shores of the Pacific, La Jolla is the most prestigious neighborhood in San Diego County. It is also home to the University of California at San Diego along with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, and other bio-medical research facilities. Housing includes many luxury homes, as well as smaller vacation homes, condos, and apartments. The heart of La Jolla is La Jolla Village, (the Village), with many stores, shops, boutiques, restaurants, delis, coffee shops, and some business offices. Near the coast, La Jolla is flat, but going up the hill one finds many attractive residential streets and tract homes. Approximately 20% of the housing was built before 1950. Beaches are accessible and traffic is a problem along the coast, especially on weekends and during the summer.
Most of the residents are college educated professionals and retirees. There are two golf courses nearby, a famed playhouse founded with the help of Gregory Peck, museums, parks and concerts, and the La Jolla Festival of Arts. Downtown San Diego is 10 miles to the south and many residents work in the high tech industries and finance firms in Sorrento Valley north of UCSD. |
